Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Physical requirements outlined below. Preferred Experience: Surgical Critical Care Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting (15-44 pounds), light lifting (under 15 pounds), moderate carrying (15-44 pounds), light carrying (under 15 pounds), pushing 4 hours, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required, walking 2 hours, standing 8 hours, near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other, hearing (aid permitted), mental and emotional stability. ["Asses, evaluate, diagnose, and provide initial treatment to adult patients who present in the Emergency Department with any symptom, illness, injury, or condition; to provide services necessary to ameliorate minor illnesses or injuries and stabilize patients with major illnesses or injuries; and to assess all patients to determine whether additional care is necessary. Perform procedures related to Emergency Medicine such as: Basic and advanced airway management, rapid sequence intubation, management of mechanical ventilation, administration of moderate sedation, EKG interpretation, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, cardioversion, defibrillation, transcutaneous cardiac pacing, venous central line placement, intraosseous access, peripheral arterial puncture for ABGs, NGT placement, gastric lavage, gastrostomy and tracheostomy tube replacement, reduction and immobilization of fractures and dislocations, wound care and closure {suture), abscess incision/drainage, lumbar puncture, paracentesis, knee arthrocentesis, anterior/posterior nasal packing, peripheral vein catheterization, vaginal pelvic exam and Foley Bladder Catheterization, Emergency surgical procedures indicated by emergency medical conditions or injuries such as emergent cricothyrotomy, chest tube placement and suprapubic cystostomy. Participation in the coordination of interfacility transfers for patients requesting transfer from another emergency department to the VACHS emergency department. Participation in the coordination and recommendation for appropriate destination of patients in the out-of-hospital environment requesting access to the VACHS emergency department. Active participation in the activation and deactivation of Hospital Diversion mode. Ensures that high quality patient care is delivered in a resource efficient manner. Promotes an environment of system-oriented continuous quality improvement. Establishes and maintains effective harmonious relationships with other peers within Surgery and other Services within our station. Follow all duties designed by the Supervisor and/or Service Chief that could be changed within a reasonable time and within a General Surgical clinical setting being provided appropriate instructions and coordination. Manage patients with Surgical Critical Care related conditions such as but not limited to: acute and chronic respiratory failure, obstructive and restrictive airway disease, home oxygen dependency problems, the patient in shock of diverse origin, severe sepsis, obstructive sleep apnea, circadian rhythm misalignment and others. Response to CODE BLUE and rapid response calls when able; acts as ACLS/RRT leader when needed and/or prior to the arrival of the CODE BLUE/RRT team. Perform procedures related to the Surgical Critical Care subspecialty such as but not limited to : central line placement, interpretation of hemodynamic data, nasotracheal/orotracheal intubation, sonographicatly directed central line placement, prescription of oxygen therapy, positive airway pressure, evaluation of imaging studies, etc."]
